Nikon D90 Transfer Software

Update: a new version of the program got released today. Please note that this software doesn't work with RAW (NEF) files (yet).

I have been a big fan and supporter of free software for Nikon DSLRs, created based on Nikon's SDK (Software Development Kit). The latest addition is Nikontrol 3K that can be downloaded for free here. The idea is that the official Nikon's Camera Control Pro doesn't support some of the latest consumer level DSLRs, not to mention its price tag of $150. The software works by connecting a Nikon D3000, D40 or a D90 via the USB cable to a PC and can:

  • remote control the camera from a computer
  • preview the last photographs taken
  • save images from your camera, with the possibility of keeping or deleting them from your device
  • transfer images to a FTP server
  • support time-lapse shooting

Software

The current Beta version is a bit buggy, but this could be because I was trying to connect a D300s which is not on the list of supported models (I was still able to trigger the D300s shutter from the PC). I talked to the developers and they are currently working on fixing and expanding the software with additional functionality.

Notes
  • • This software can display previews of NEF and NRW files created with all supported Nikon digital cameras except the COOLPIX 8800, COOLPIX 8700, COOLPIX 8400, COOLPIX 5700, COOLPIX 5400, and COOLPIX 5000.
  • • When creating custom Picture Controls, use RAW images taken with your camera to preview the effect. The color reproduction in pictures shot using custom Picture Controls created with images from other cameras may differ from the preview.
  • • When importing custom tone curves created with existing applications, this software will load only the first 20 anchor points, starting from the white point. Any additional points will be lost.
  • • Picture Control Utility 2 cannot be launched while Picture Control Utility is running; exit Picture Control Utility before launching Picture Control Utility 2. Similarly, Picture Control Utility cannot be launched while Picture Control Utility 2 is running.
  • • Changes made with other Nikon software are not reflected in Picture Control Utility 2.
  • • Depending on the model of the camera you use and the model of camera with which the picture was taken, you may be unable to use NEF/NRW (RAW) files created with other cameras as previews, in which case the default image will be used instead.
